History
When the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) ceased using reserve diving teams to support the Australian Clearance Diving teams and the wider fleet in 2016, the principals, Mark Orkney and Paul Taylor recognised there was a gap in the diving market servicing the Navy
They created Dt5 Commercial Pty Ltd in 2017, a commercial diving company aimed at providing complete diving solutions to the military and civilian organisations supporting the military around Australia. Using primarily ex-Navy divers, DT5 Commercial is able to service all of the underwater RAN installations and ranges drawing on the vast previous experience and knowledge gained whilst working on these installations in the past.
In 2017, the RAN determined there was a requirement to procure new Scuba Air equipment as the existing equipment was aging and maintenance on the old equipment was expensive and not viable ongoing. This led to the commencement of the Scuba Air Mod 1 program. Dt5 Commercial employees were involved in the trials to select the new equipment. The outcome of the trials was the selection of Hollis first and second stage regulators, OTS full face mask with communications, an Emergency Breathing System (EBS) and OTS communications suite.
As the new equipment was substantially different to the previous Scuba Air gear, the existing courses needed to be re-developed.Dt5 employees continued as members of the course re-development team and on completion were the lead instructors for the new courses. They continued in these roles for several years until the ADF Dive School staff were trained in the new equipment and took on course instruction.
